Brimfield Decisions

I spent the day yesterday with Tracy Foley (Water & Main) and Sheila Igoe (Igoe Creative) at Brimfield.  Every year is different.  We’ve sloshed through puddles in the pouring rain, carried heavy furnishings, pulled wagons with our children (oh, wait! that was just me) and each time have relished in every heart-pounding, panic-purchasing experience.  The past three years, we’ve had the pleasure of participating in the #Brimfield Tweet-ups, and have enjoyed seeing the familiar faces of those in the design community that have the same passions as we do.  (So, thank you! to Gretchen Aubuchon, Shane Inman and all those involved in making the VIP tent possible.)

With every trip to Brimfield, there is always that one thing that haunts us on the Route 20 stretch through Sturbridge back home.  For me it was these mid-century chairs:

DSC_0965

Robert Kelly, of BCWest, gave me the chance to give my best cash offer, over another buyer who would come back at the end of the day.  I told him that I’d round the aisle and make a decision, and as I walked away, I knew I would never see those chairs again.  I called him at 7am this morning, just on the off-chance they’d still be available (and knowing Tracy would be heading back to Brimfield today), but sure enough…Bam!  Gone.  Lesson learned.

Otherwise, I’m pretty pleased with what I brought home!

We were all in agreement.  We didn’t see any new trends.  Last year, I commented about a military trend that I saw amongst the industrial things we’ve seen for a few years now.  It’s cool to watch how home décor and fashion merge with all the military influences on the runways – and love Fashion + Décor for that too!  So, I didn’t come home with much in the way of photographs to document this trip.  But, for those who need an eye-candy fix, check out Sarah Winchester’s beautiful photos from her visit earlier in the week!

Opening Day at #Brimfield

2012-05-10 09.44.30

The Brimfield Antique Show begins today, and the Tweets are rolling in.  Some of my favorites are listed below, especially the comment that #Brimfield is like “Christmas morning.”

It’s exciting to hear that renowned designers, Celerie Kemble and Matthew Patrick Smyth will be attending this year’s Brimfield Tweet-Up!  What’s a Tweet-Up?  Co-host, Cynthia Bogart of The Daily Basics, explains:

“A Tweet-up.  It’s a party where folks who ‘tweet’ together can get together in real life. Twitter, that online tool where people talk all day long, has become a part of thousands of people’s daily lives. In 140 characters or less, a Tweeter has conversations with ‘followers’ in their ‘community,’ where they discuss their interests and businesses and share information. In the case of The Brimfield Tweet-up, most of the Tweeters who will attend are in the interior design, antiques or arts fields. What’s a Tweet-up like? The best way to describe it is like walking into a party with dear old friends who have the exact same interests as you. The only difference is you’ve never met them in person—only by tweeting with them online.”  (New England Home)

I started with this image of a wall gallery and after clicking and clicking, came upon Scout’s Honor Co. founder, Annemarie Buckley‘s gorgeous nautical photography.  I am drawn to the colors of the weathered docks and the pops of turquoise, yellow and red in the photos.  Obviously, Annemarie, loves those colors too, as you can see the same turquoises, reds and yellows on her bathroom wall — which doubles as a mood board!

(Btw, can you spy threes in her bathroom?)

You can see a tour of Annemarie Buckley’s home over on PoppyTalk, where I also fell in love with this print.  A holla out to my California girls!

After viewing her home, I discovered that Annemarie Buckley creates custom illustrations for her stationery studio, Scout’s Honor Co., based in Burlington, Vermont.

This sampling of her nautical prints is classic and simple, however, Annemarie, you missed your calling!  Your photography is beautiful.

As her design states, “The Adventure Begins”… and, it sure did for me.

Kelly McGuill and Company

Earlier this week, I ran into Kelly McGuill and Tracy Parkinson (Nest and Company) at the flower market.  I had the great pleasure of meeting both Kelly and Tracy almost a year ago, so it was nice to catch up with them again and talk shop!  Kelly and Tracy are both talented interior designers and photo stylists, so I had to share some of their projects with you here.  (How k-ass is that neon “GUESTS” sign above?  Gets me fired up for #Brimfield!)

Kelly’s bedroom design is so clever!  It looks like the beds are flipped around…the original headboards serving as the footboards, and the shuttered windows above the beds as headboards.  It’s a great solution for placing beds up against windows.  (Chairs similar to ones we saw here).

Love the large-scaled art work above the sofa.

The White Pants Rule

white pants

L - J.Crew |C - Theory |R - Genetic Denim

“Can I wear white pants?”  I am asked this question often.  Especially this time of year — the transition period between a New England Spring (which can mean 40 degree weather) and Summer.  The traditional rule of No White before Memorial Day and after Labor Day, is just that.  One of tradition and etiquette.

My answer:  Follow the weather.  If it’s over 60 degrees, go for it, as long as it’s April (I think I may be in the camp of No White before Easter), though I reserve wearing white pants at night for the summertime.  I would, however, break the rule for winter whites (in wools and appropriate Fall/Winter fabrics) and super stylish white tuxedo pants — and yes to resorts, vacations in tropical places, of course.  Otherwise, surprisingly (to myself), I guess I’m conservative on this one.

If you don’t like my answer, try these:

1.  A video clip and visual of Do’s and Don’ts:

2.  Stick to the rule, according to Social Primer, when it comes to “Arenas of Impression.”

3. Wear white immediately!  Says the Huffington Post.

Are you a rule-breaker? A stickler for etiquette? or somewhere in between?  Sound in below.

Jenna the Lioness

Like one of the most majestic animals in the world — a powerful presence, with no natural predators — Jenna Lyons pretty much rocks it in the fashion world.  A Lyon-ess.  If you weren’t already convinced, settle-in and read (it’s a great, long article) about “How Jenna Lyons Transformed J.Crew Into A Cult Brand” – Fast Company.

And if that’s not enough, she…

1.  Made the 2013 TIME100: Time‘s 100 Most Influential People list

2.  Owns 300 pairs of shoes.  Takes 3 minutes to get dressed.  And multitasks…successfully.  Take a glimpse into a day in her life, here.

3.  Has an incredibly stylish Brooklyn brownstone.

Indivisible

Star’fish’ Spangled Banner – Karen Robertson Collection

Marathon Monday is a rite of passage as a Boston resident, either as a spectator or a competitor.  As a student at Boston College, every year the Marathon was an emotional high — to watch runners make it through Heartbreak Hill and overcome huge physical and personal challenges — not to mention, a great excuse to party.  This year, my entire family was in Boston.  The boys at the Red Sox game, and me and the girls on our way to cheer on our friend near the finish line.

We timed our friend to finish between 3:00-3:30 p.m., and found ourselves at the corner of Dartmouth and Beacon Streets right around 2:50 p.m.  Stopped at a red light, everything seemed normal, with a bit of that Marathon energy in the air.  However, within minutes, we witnessed mass hysteria.  Crowds of people running north on Dartmouth St. away from the finish line towards the Charles River.  Distraught faces and people rushing into the streets with total disregard for cars and traffic.  I asked someone what was going on?!  Why was everyone running?  and was told that two explosions had just occurred at the finish line.

I continued up Beacon Street in my car, with my girls asking all sorts of questions in the back seat.  Why can’t we go to the playground?  What did that man mean by explosions?  As I approached Kenmore Square, I tried to get on the phone to call the guys at Fenway, and tell them to jump into my car, but the phone lines were dead.  And at that point, all of the memories of 9/11 came flooding back, when we sat in our living room in Boston trying to call all of our friends and loved ones in New York City.

Sirens blaring.  State police.  Ambulances.  Road blocks.  The city responded within minutes, and as I made my way to Storrow Drive to get out of the city and back home, my mind was racing.  The texts started coming through.  One friend crossed the finish line minutes before the bombs went off.  Another friend was okay but unable to finish the race.  Our good friend, whose office is located at 745 Boylston Street, was fortunately traveling and out-of-town that day.

We were close enough to feel the terror, but far enough not to have witnessed the horror.  Today we pray for the victims and their families, and are grateful for the volunteers and medical personnel that courageously stepped into the midst of this great tragedy to help.

I appreciate the sentiment from other Boston bloggers Sarah Winchester, Erin Gates and  Marni Elyse Katz.  One Nation, under God, indivisible.

Work & Play

In my case, this past week was just the opposite.  Play, then work.  Monday morning red-eye from Los Angeles, then off and designing.  Fortunately for me, the work is “play” also.

Anyway you slice it, Spring = stripes.  Even though we’ve seen stripes carry through to Fall RTW lines, each Spring season stripes come out in full force, and I love them (check back here and here)!
